A Case of Refractory Childhood Glaucoma Secondary to Weill-Marchesani Syndrome: Management with Combined CO2 Laser-Assisted Sclerectomy Surgery and Trabeculectomy

A 2-year-old girl was diagnosed as Weill-Marchesani syndrome with typical systemic features of short stature, short and stubby hands and feet, language disorders and mental retardation. He developed bilateral angle closure glaucoma, ectopia lentis and suffered visual loss from the ocular features of Weill-Marchesani syndrome. The child was successfully treated by combined CO₂ laser-assisted sclerectomy surgery and trabeculectomy.     

Building a Culturally Responsive Workforce: Faculty of Color in Nursing Education

The representation of nursing faculty of color is disproportionate to that in the general population, despite recruitment and retention strategies. Boosting the presence of nursing faculty of color requires an understanding of factors that undermine diversity initiatives and calls for the adoption of innovative practices. This article addresses the importance of racial and ethnic diversity within nursing education. Furthermore, it examines the factors that prevent the recruitment and retention of a racially and ethnically diverse nursing faculty workforce and provides evidence-based recommendations for increasing diversity among nursing faculty and nursing organizations.     

基于中国输血大讲堂的网络在线继续教育模式探索与实践

目的探索输血医学在线继续教育新模式,发挥继续教育对于学科可持续发展的促进作用。方法利用在线网络平台创建中国输血大讲堂,以在线直播专题讲座的方式将输血医学相关的基础与临床研究新进展传递给全国的一线工作人员。通过问卷星软件系统进行匿名网络问卷调查,了解大讲堂观众人群构成以及对课程设置和讲课效果的评价情况。结果过去四年多已完成166期、249个学时的网络授课,超过6.3万人次收看了直播讲座。问卷调查共回收有效问卷1266份,讲座内容安排满意度评分(S1)≥90、80≤S1<90和70≤S1<80分别占61.45%、30.88%和5.85%;整体师资能力水平满意度(S2)≥90、80≤S2<90和70≤S2<80分别占68.01%、25.91%和5.06%;讲课效果包括提高临床实际处理问题的能力(89.02%)、增强基础理论水平(84.36%)、完善对输血医学学科整体认识(83.89%)、开拓学科视野(81.04%)、有助于改善与临床之间的协作关系(64.14%)和锻炼临床思维(63.35%)。结论中国输血大讲堂这种网络在线继续教育模式,可以有效地克服时间、空间的限制,为广大输血从业人员提供便捷、系统的知识更新渠道,受众人群在基础知识、基本理论、基本技能等方面得到不同程度的提高。     

英语学界对“母乳不足”现象的认知进化

“母乳最好”的宣传话语在目前育龄人群中几乎耳熟能详,但很多信奉科学育儿、希望母乳喂养的都市女性却发现母乳喂养困难重重,其中遭遇“母乳不足”的案例较为多见。回顾历史发现,“母乳不足”的现象全球普遍存在,这个话题在20世纪80年代的英语学术圈曾引起热议。经过十余年讨论后,学者们基本认同大部分遭遇母乳不足的女性并不是真正的“母乳不足”,而是由于种种社会文化因素干扰造成母乳喂养失败的这一结论,其中产后初期的奶瓶介入是重要原因。术语也由insufficient milk syndrome变为perceived insufficient milk,以此来强调“母乳不足”不是一种病理现象,而更多是一种文化感知。     

A historical analysis of vaccine mandates in the United States military and its application to the COVID-19 vaccine mandate

The Department of Defense has implemented a mandate that all military personnel be vaccinated against COVID-19. This article reviews the historical precedent of vaccine mandates for United States military personnel dating back to the formation of the continental army, as well as previous controversies about vaccine mandates such as the first influenza vaccine mandate and the Anthrax Vaccine Immunization Program. The historical review discusses precedent for the current COVID-19 vaccine mandate and the reception of these vaccine mandates by military personnel. The review then discusses how these historical lessons can inform the present COVID-19 vaccine mandate.     

Rehabilitation in long COVID-19: A mini-review

We have been experiencing multiple waves of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. With these unprecedented waves, we have entered into an era of ‘new normal’. This pandemic has enforced us to rethink the very basics of childhood learning: Habits, health etiquette, and hygiene. Rehabilitation has immense importance during this pandemic considering a few aspects. Multidisciplinary COVID-19 rehabilitation clinics are essential to address the demand. The equitable distribution of COVID-19 rehabilitation services for differently-abled individuals during the pandemic is an important aspect. Rehabilitation needs identification and further studies on various rehabilitation interventions are among the key unmet future research needs.     

Burnout and the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner: Who Is Experiencing Burnout and Why?

IntroductionA sexual assault nurse examiner role exemplifies the high-stress and highly emotional patient interactions that are often associated with burnout. The purpose of this study was to examine the frequency of burnout among sexual assault nurse examiners in North Carolina.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was an anonymous survey of practicing sexual assault nurse examiners within North Carolina using the Maslach Burnout Inventory and additional demographics. Results were analyzed with odds ratios, confidence intervals, Fisher exact, chi-square, and Kruskal Wallis tests as appropriate.ResultsAmong 95 respondents, burnout was more frequent in sexual assault nurse examiners who stopped both emergency and nurse examiner work (55.6%, odds ratio 4.41, 95% confidence interval 1.07-18.06) and in dual function nurses (both emergency and nurse examiner work, 35.7%, odds ratio 2.71, 95% confidence interval 1.04-7.06). Sexual assault nurse examiners who had a high percentage of pediatric cases (above the median of 40%) were more likely to meet burnout thresholds for emotional exhaustion scores > 26 (48.78% vs 25.93%, χ² = 5.30, P = .02) and more likely to meet burnout thresholds for depersonalization scores > 9 (48.78% vs 24.07%, χ² = 6.28, P = .01).DiscussionHigher frequency of burnout threshold criteria was found in those people who worked concurrently as a sexual assault nurse examiner and an emergency nurse and in those who had retired from both specialties. We also found that sexual assault nurse examiners with a higher case mix of pediatric cases had higher emotional exhaustion scores and higher depersonalization scores.
